Doubt it'd be illegal because its not a compliance plate.
If they put it on a car and try sell it as an original id say it would be illegal though

I know number plates are. Simple fact that the Government didn't make money out of the price upgrade between metal and plastic.

GTS125 is bang on though. It isn't a compliance plate, so not illegal (I assume).
Anyone who does a REVS check or HSV certification will find out immediately that's it's not the right car.
Otherwise there will be tell tale signs if it's been in a prang and re-shelled etc.

Gone are the days of re-shelling Torana's etc (well not quite), but in our HSV era I'd say it would be pretty hard to do with everyone's (Gov, insurance, HSV) databases referencing VIN's, accidents, write-offs etc.

Putting a build plate number on a vehicle that isn’t that build number...... I would say that would be fraud you’d think

We're getting confused between a build plate and a compliance plate.

You'd have to be blind freddy to be frauded by someone who has a different build plate on the car, especially with all the checks available today - linking VIN's, builds, engine numbers along with all the special features a HSV has to offer that is visible to the eye.
You'd know straight away if something was awry.

In terms of a policeman pulling you up and asking about your build plate (highly unlikely, and what would they even know about it anyway?), what is it to them what number or trim you have?
I may be wrong, just my thoughts.

Could be stolen trim lol, all wreckers and panel shops have to put down where parts come from now.
