    Inflation Calculator

I was talking about house prices this morning and wondered what certain values years ago would be worth today.
So example if I bought a house in 1980 for $10000 how much would I have to sell that house for today to break even.
Obviously that thought extended to cars.
    What would a new $48k VL SS Group A be worth if bought today, 2000 VT11 GTS @ $100,000, 2008 W427 @ $165k etc etc.

I'll drop an inflation calculator (guide) link here, quite interesting. This of course doesn't factor in interest rates..

    http://www.in2013dollars.com/1997-AU...7?amount=69000

    Walky at $48k = $105,445.78 today
    VT2 GTS $100k = $153,006.99 today
    W427 $165k = $196,633.99 today

Yip people seem to ignore this. Makes me laugh when people buy houses, spend 2 years painting and building decks etc then say how much profit they made, when often I've made the same amount out of my properties sitting on the couch

Back to cars, they are not good investments, some loose less than others, but rarely make a profit. Essentially when you consider what else you could have invested in with the money

    Ive always thought about it.
if i bought my EL GT new for $69k it would be the equivalent to $112k today.
Even a VS Maloo at $48k in 1998 is $72k today.
Luckily i didn't pay anywhere near either of those prices

The equivalent cars wouldn't be far off those prices these days

The crystal ball would have said buy "a yellow Rolls Royce, a Bond DB5, Mercedes Gullwing (not the motor cycle) and an XY Phase III." One or two others could be thrown in as well.

I could be very wrong but, I think a lot of people feel uneasy spending such a large sum of money on a car so they need to tell themselves its not lost, really its an investment to ease that pain.

Sort of like when fat chicks feel guilty about over eating and not exercising so they tell themselves its their metabolism and they would be fat regardless so the sofa sitting eating chocolate is not so bad.

At the end of the day its your money, and if you choose to invest it, buy a car with it, or just set fire to a pile of it (almost the same as buying a car) then live with your choice and get over it.

As the slogan "I just want one" points out, things don't always need to be logical or well justified.

Has nothing to do with guilt or getting over it. Its interesting to see how prices relate to today.
