    Air-con Issue

    Hey guys,

Attempted to take the Maloo out for a spin today but turned around after 5kms and changed cars. For some reason the Air-con doesn't want to cool?? Compressor kicks in but that's all, no cool air. Also noticed when 'Auto' selected it takes a minute or so for the air velocity to increase whereas in the VF and other cars the fan speed is almost instantaneous. Thermo fan doesn't kick in either??

Ideas? I was thinking a failed temp sensor or gas purge from somewhere? From memory it worked fine the last time ... a few months back.

    Thoughts??

If you can hear the compressor kicking in it shouldn't be low on gas as it won't come on if the gas is low. But the thermo should be coming on if the air con is running so somethings not right there....

If its not getting any air flow thru the cooler core it won't be cooling the air so it may just be an issue with the fans. Checked the fuses, relays, wiring etc?

And are you 100% you can hear the compressor engaging? May have thrown the belt as they so often do. The thermo should come on if the system pressure is high enough so it may be low on gas but again, the safety in the compressor clutch shouldn't allow it to run if the gas is low.

How was the engine temp if the thermos didn't come on? Surely it got up to temp in 5kms

The most likely problem is you have lost the refrigerant charge especially seeing your compressor is operating. I'm not familiar with hsv control system on auto but it may have temp sensor on evap coil so because it's not cooling & sensing drop in temp fan not switching to high speed.

Just read white_lie post as I don't know car A/C control system I'm not sure but don't think these systems have a low pressure safety fitted which means they will run no refrigerant charge, which doesn't matter as much as compressors with built in motor winding that require the refrigerant for motor cooling. They are fitted with high pressure cut out only from my understanding.

Take it back to your dealer & get them to check out the system.
Had a similar problem with our VZ GTO when new,..A/C wouldn't work on hot days!!...Reason?....too much gas, 20% too much, dropped some gas, system worked perfectly, for at least another 5 yrs, until we sold the GTO.

Thanks. Yeah, checked the compressor kicking in when A/C selected on console .. On/Off no probs. Car was definitely at temp as it was 30+ degrees ambient when I started the run. Will check a few more things tomorrow.

As pickles said if the system is overcharged then it will turn off, especially in hot conditions as the pressure is going to be a lot higher, you never want an over charged AC system either 90-100% charged as soon as you go above 100% the pressure goes up and so does the temp of the R134a.

Looking for colder IAT's? we have achieved 11c IAT2 on a 41c day and -8c during winter.
We have proven cabin AC vent temps are better than GM spec, both IAT2's and vent temps are all on video with nothing to hide.

I would think gas leak. The WK goes warm for a brief period, accelerating on a steep climb but no other vices. Full airflow does not normally result in any air conditioning system (including house) until the unit is at the desired temperature and everything is in full normal operations condition.

Have you had a chance to look into it any further?

I'd avoid the dealer and get an aircon specialist to give it a service.
I had a mobile aircon guy come and do my VX Clubby last weekend. It wasn't very good when I bought it but got worse over the last month until it wasn't doing anything.
The aircon guy reckoned it hadn't been serviced before, so over 15 years.
He removed the remaining gas, replaced a couple of the common seals that leak, changed the filter and re-gassed with dye and lube. Its now pumping out air at under 2 deg and has been so good in this heatwave the last few days. If it goes bad again we will be able to see where the leak is due to the dye.
It cost me $280 to have done on a Sunday at my place and was worth every cent.
