    R8 gripes.....

My 2013 (MY12.5) R8 manual sedan has 2000km on it now. I have some gripes that I'm not sure are normal or if anybody else is experiencing them:

    1. When I change gears from 1st to 2nd in a spirited fashion, I get a loud crunching/grinding sound, and I'm always fully depressing the clutch. Tim Johnson from HSV told me in person that this gearbox is specifically made for people who want to "slam through the gears". But I don't get that feeling. Has anybody experienced this? Is this a normal characteristic of the TR6060?

    2. Fuel economy. When I fill up (BP98 ), my range only shows 275km. WTF??? When it's at half tank it's saying the range is 140km. I don't drive my car like a maniac. A squirt to 5500-6000rpm now and again through 1st and 2nd gears, then the rest of the time it's normal shifts at 3000-3500rpm, cruising in 5th or 6th with the revs sitting where they need to be given the applicable speed limit. Tyres are inflated to 40psi cold. Why am I getting such crappy fuel economy?

    3. Passenger front window makes a creaking sound when going up or down?

    4. Radio. It won't tune to some FM stations using the seek function. And why won't the track info display when I'm streaming music through Bluetooth? How does one update the GPS to get the new speed camera locations?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

    1) The boxes generally are quite notchy when new. The fluid they put in isn't the best that you could be using and it's very easy to miss gears. Most people recommend a better fluid and a Ripshift or similar but you would like to think for the price you pay for these vehicles, they'd be as good as the possibly could be!

    2) On the economy, how much are you actually getting to a tank? Reset the trip meter when you fill up, then see how many litres you're putting in and divide the two to get an average. If it's different to what the computer is saying your average usage is (I would like to hope so) then take it back to the dealer to get recalibrated.... or get it done at your next service.

    3) Sounds like a common thing, again, get it looked at by the dealer. You shouldn't have to touch anything like that on a brand new car.

    4) Might be a bad connection on the aerial? What are you using to stream music, an iPhone?
With the maps, I would guess it's a dealer thing again.

Hopefully you'll get some better answers from Chris

Doesnt sound like a normal problem mate.

Have you tried HSV directly. Either call, facebook or email. Im currently dealing with them over issues with my DDI system (2005 SV6000) ad they have been very helpful. Good place to start i think

    Ok so

    1. I found if my timing is out slightly when letting the clutch out I get a grind and a shudder through the box. Try slowing down a tad as you pump through the gears.....

    2. What does it show as your average fuel consumption? I average 12.2L/100km but went I've have had. Bad day my consumption is somewhere around 23.8L/100km. Have you had the engine tuned or modified at all.

    3. Have you had the windows tinted at all? First thing I would check is that the door trims are sitting correctly.....

    4. He reception out of the head deck is shit. Sorry HSV but it is so is that out of the Holden. But with stitcher and pandora apps available with the new VF range problemed solved.
I don't know why the track info doesnt stream over but it doesn't.plug it in through the USB port you get better sound quality any way. GPS updates are done through your local HSV service center.

    Hope it helps

I'm on par with you, 2,500km's and just had my first 3,000km checkup and paid extra to have the oil (mobile 1, another extra) changed - no gripes there.

    1/ Have not experienced

2/ My fuel economy readings have been getting better and better - was initially getting < 400 on full tank (i.e. 385) and now slowly creeping up to 450km (readings only)

    3/ Have not experienced

4/ I tried 4 different 'stubby' antenna's (even official Walkinshaw) and returned all, have reverted back to the stock and even that is poor in suburbia Perth.. I too cant get song titles when streaming via bluetooth but can via iPod function when connected via USB.

When I took the car for its 3,000 service I couldn't find the dealer's address in the nav - brought this up with the dealer and he suggested the maps can be 2 years old - shame their business has been there for 10 years!! I actually forgot to follow this up after being told he could look how much it is to update to the most recent map... for a brand new car!

    Now: Audi RS3 (11.00 & 136MPH)

Funny how you can buy a Navman for a couple of hundred dollars and get free national (and international if required) updates .. whereas you pay tens of thousands of dollars for a car with Satnav built in and you have to pay for an update ...??

1/ i have never had a noise from going out of a gear only when ive gone into a gear and not had the clutch in far enough so could be worth checking how u are going into gears when spirited shifts are needed, maby try a fast shift from 1-2 but only push the clutch in and dont release if there is no noise there from the shift then its a noise created when the clutch is released and maby isnt quite in the next gear yet, it took me a while to work out how these boxes like to be shifted and now i can just rip all gears where as before 2-3 was a pain

2/has it always been like that with the fuel or just recently..? like white_lie says reset it when u fuel up and see how many km u actually get out of a tank, the average is taken from the instant v litres in tank and updated every set amount of minuets so if u have had a spirited drive or lots of stop start it will go higher quicker, also if the sender in the tank is becoming faulty it will change the reading also but should be ok since the car is quite new

3/ive had this creaking i only just noticed since i dont drive mine durin the week anymore very annoying think its just a lubrication issue in the tracks but havnt looked too much into it yet

4/ u can get the new "whereis" map 19 and just find the gps unit to see if yours is the SD card type or cd type and swap it over think the maps are bout the $160 ish

These gearboxes are known to be notchy from 1st to 2nd, a spirited change could cause it to crunch if your not perfect with the gear change.
I was reading your other posts about the performance. I know what your saying about the 'feeling' only capable. Mine is supercharged and it 'feels' adequate! However, they are deceptively fast, take it to the track and see what it does, you will be surprised of what times you run, there is a thread on here where members have posted times, they are impressive.
If you want "seat of your pants" fast, supercharge it, you won't be disappointed.
