Hey guys and gals. I'm new to the forum as you can see. Basically, i'm interested in picking up a 2002 or even a later model Monaro CV8. I have previously owned a 4-cyl, a rotory, a 6-cyl turbo and now it's time for an 8.

Now, I was speaking to a couple of friends that have LS1 motors in a VY-SS and Maloo. While one of them says the engine has never given him problems and the motor is bulletproof, the other says the engine drinks the oil - he has taken it to a few mechanics to work on yet the oil disappears?

I'm wondering if there are any problems with the LS1 or even the LS2 motor? Have you heard of any oil chewing problems etc. Also, what I should look out for (apart from the obvious)

It was more of a problem with the earlier motors, ie VT-VX that had the oil consumption problems. GMH sorted most of these under warranty. The later motors were generally trouble free, some also suffer from 'piston slap' which is basically excessive movement between the piston and cylinder so you get a bit of a slapping/knocking sound when cold but as it warms up and everything expands it goes away. A thicker oil may also mask some of it. The main engine problems other than that were in the C4B's from the GTS, SV300 etc and they break valve springs and chew cam lobes. But since you're looking at CV8's, this doesn't apply.

Save a bit more if you can and get the series 3 with the VY interior or even the VZ model but you won't get a 6L unless you get a VZ GTO unfortunately.
