Definately worth it. The R8 has bigger brakes and Coulsen seats. Not sure what else.
A good exhaust, GTS intake and a tune will get the 250kw up to around 300kw and it's more fuel efficient.

I was in the same situation when I bought my VT R8(7 months ago). I went for the HSV over the SS because-
1. HSV is based on a Berlina. ie. full electrics, 3 window dash display. (SS is pretty much an Executive)
2. Better standard suspension and brakes.
3. Has 3.73(manual) diff gears instead of 3.46.
4. Standard 18" rims
5. Nicer body kit(IMO)
6. It should retain value better than an SS as the HSV is more exclusive.
All the LS1 engines are the same. The only differences are intake, exhaust and tune. All have the same potential. The R8 comes with OK extractors which are fine unless chasing big power.
The biggest problem I had was finding one with low km's and in good condition.

the one im gettin is black n has only done 120,000kms pretty good hey. really clean to. the only thinkin im goin to do to it is exhaust to make it sound like a beast. after i payed a bit more off of it ill start doin it up hard. probly pay it off in 6 months. then its just a matter of wat first.

Nice. Mines done 75,000k's. Manual or auto?
Once you've done the exhaust you may as well upgrade the intake and if funds are tight just get a mail order tune. Well worth it. Intake and mafless mailorder tune will be about $800-$850.

Exhaust will depend on what extra mods you have planned. If you're only looking at bolt on mods then twin 2 1/2". If you're planning on big cams or forced induction then you will need to go bigger.
The intake pipe is a bit small, so an upgrade to the GTS 4" pipe with an extra hole in the intake box makes a difference. But, again, if you have big power plans you may as well get an over the radiator intake for around $500-$700.
Before you start modding you need to decide what your final power is likely to be otherwise you'll end up replacing things twice if you change your mind.
