Hi, everyone.
Wanted to know what peoples opinions were on under car neon lights and if anyone on the forum has neons on their car? Do you like them? and Do you know what the "official" law is regarding neons under ones car?
Cheers

my friend has a green VS and he has blue flashing neons under it. it's all legal, i'm not sure about the law though and what you can and cant have. check it out at your local auto shop. (autobarn)

Maybe the law states that while driving must be turned off then while parked switched on isnt a problem but legal all round hmmm??? But Im sure that neons are not legal to have switched on while driving that Im sure of..

it's legal, but you cant have neons that flash while driving, only ones that stay on.

different states have different rules. ik now in QLD (i think) you cant have neons under the front of the car...

back to your original question, i think they look great in the movies, Fast & Furious etc. but real life? the few i have seen look stupid, need a few together to get the real effect i suspect not a lone driver? any way i understand about $1500 to install properly with upgraded alternator etc. But watch those gutters and drive ways to keep you poor replacing em. Cheers :D

mate jus bought set of four for his skyline was about $270 from autobarn i think then installed a switch to turn them on and off when he pleases. Having a larger cca battery than std helps also.

personally, dont go for neons. i have LED's on my car and theyre a big hit with the crowd, as well as the car!

they were so easy to install too! there are 9 different modes to the lights and 7 different colors. i like to put on demo mode so it cycles thru everything and the colors constantly cycle thru all 7

i believe its legal to have them installed as long as the tube isnt exposed underneath the car.

they can look good when done properly, but they can look downright stupid on some cars.

i have the undercar LED kit and i have neons inside the car. i also have strobe lights in the corner markers of the car and inside as well.
my theme of the car is red and blue. one side of the car is all red colors and the other side of the car is blue. i have a five strobe light bar in between the back seats and by the floor boards in the front. my sub box holds two 12" Duals bumping almost 1 kW of power to each speaker. the box is lighted with blue LEDS and a red neon, so the color frequencies dont mesh and become purple.

ill see if i cant send a pic in.

I cant see any reason at all to dress your car up with this yanky inspired s*#t and glitter. Dont we drive Aussie muscle cars? Leave the poxy lights and stuff to the wannabes out there who think more of how much attention they get from their other tosser mates than of the quality of the cars they drive. I Personally cringe when I see a car tarted up with these kind of stupid mods (makes them look like mobile brothels) and I laugh when I see these people pulled over by the cops for being d#*kheads and attracting too much attention to them selves. Spend your money on things that enhance your cars not ruin them. :x

naa naa, thats just the Acura that has that. the H@SV doesnt have any of that. muscle doesnt need Bling. the acura i take to shows for that specific purpose and i have won many trophies with it. the other car doesnt need that. personally, i dont like the rice cars. (thats probably why it got stolen lol)

i had some blue ones under the front of mine for a little while then sort of got over them, a mate got a new sticker on the front of his car for having them so maybe its up to the police at the time?

I agree the police are most of the time confused with the law when it comes to car mods. I have had many yellow stickers and everytime the police told me different stories.
Get this: The cop looked into the engine bay of my Torana and told me that chrome rocker covers were illegal hmhm??? :?
two weeks later fixed everything that I was told to fix but I left the chrome rocker covers on for the Vicroads to check. Arrived at the Vicroads office in Dandy and the car was checked the chrome rocker covers passed so what is the real law?

The other time I was told to take my 5inch tacho off and remove the fuel filter that was hanging off the back of the car. I didnt touch anything just drove down to Vicroads parked the car, lady come out into the carpark looked at the car and asked me whether I removed those items and no shit the tacho is 5inch and the fuel filter you cannot miss it I said yes and off I went how easy was that. Dont get me wrong it wasnt always so easy but this time it was a joke.

thanks for that situation. never had it happen before but then again i dnt have any 5" tacho :p

Back to the topic -- I like neons but I think personally under car ones only suit some cars, like CRXs, Acuras, Supras, Skylines etc.. About the law I'm not sure of it either a mate told me a while ago that they are illegal if they distract attention from other drivers -- but I can't be sure of this info or where he got the info from. I like the neons that go around subwoofers and flash to bass and techno sounds :D.

I'm not into neons or anything else that may flash or light up under the car , it looks nice on the show cars when they are trying to display all the crome and hard work they put into making the underside look as good as the body , but on everyday cars it does'nt look as nice.I was also under the belief that it is legal to have them fitted to your car but not legal to drive the car with them turned on.I have a friend that had little lights fitted to his wipers , the cops pulled him and made him disconnect them and let him off with a warning.

They are rice and would be cool on a GTR skyline
but we are HSV and we don't need trinkets to impress

Sorry to say I have green neon tubes undernrath & police spec strobes fitted within front headlight assemblies, never been stopped for neons, would never drive with strobes on.

Rarely put them on driving but use them at meets & shows.

Law over here vague at times but as long as the source is not visable & not blue (police colour) it seems to be ok.

I agree, no need for rice on a HSV

Also, illegal in NSW to have ON whilst driving, if car is stationary, no probs.

I agree with Wagnman!! We drive Aussie Muscle Cars, who needs neon lights? Looks like a girley car, surely our V8 muscle cars get enough notice on the cars merits alone. Also dont need to bring attention to yourself with the Boys in Blue. Don't like them. Unsure of their legal status in different states in Oz.

herez a few tipz on how u can power neons that will be attached to a subwoofer box in the car

I have to assume that the neons are just for decoration and do not need speaker supply, so again i have to assume you want to power them from the car battery, as well as the mains. Neons are normally rated at 90 volts, so in mains use they have a resistor fitted, not much use on 12v, so to use them in a situation like you want would involve a bit of cost, the first thing is that you need to get them running on 12v, there are little invertors around that will do this, however, if you are going to play with mains and you are not experienced with mains, i suggest you be very careful, 240v bites and bites hard, so i suggest you make them run on the inverter even when on mains, so an appropriate plug pack could be purchased.

I'm not a fan of Neons. I suppose seeing too many riced up clapped out commodores around lit up like a christmas tree has caused my dislike for them. IMO.

Sometimes the wrong attention and..

and sometimes the right attention…

Seriously, I get asked about the car at least three times if I take it local, get followed home, flagged down etc. most end up saying ‘ I just want one’ – funny that

One of my oldest friends will not let me take it to Scotland as it scares her silly so we have to do the 2,000 Km trip in a smart instead!

The HSV has been to Holland earlier this year, couple of chaps came over with Holden jackets, I said do you have one, sadly not they said in perfect English, we have Opel instead. One guy’s girl friend nearly climaxed when she got out of a stationary HSV, he said it’s her dream car, she has posters in our bedroom!

Thought I would share images of our girls that go with us to shows

I can't talk for other states but in Victoria under car neons are legal as long as they don't flash.
Led's on the wiper washers etc are legal as long as red lights aren't placed on the front of the car and white lights aren't placed at the rear so as to confuse other drivers as to whether you are coming or going. Any other colours are perfectly legal as long as they don't flash.
The reason some police seem confused about the issue is because the law has changed several times in the last few years as polititions try to keep up with all the new trends that car enthusiests come up with.
So in Victoria if a policeman tries to tell you otherwise feel free to set him straight.

In my opinion ricers can be cool with neons but too often are over done or poorly installed.
With Aussie cars I think they can still be used to good effect but the risk of over doing it is much higher.
The golden rule is you should NEVER see the neons, just the effects they create.

I agree with JIM007 muscle cars are very easily overdone with neons and It can really ruin the Image of the car, but It can also look quite good *As seen in the VT GTS photos*, my opinion is that if you want to put neons on a car, leave it with the rice burners and leave the muscles to chrome n cubes, but personal opinion overides all, if it's your car and you want neons (as long as they don't flash) go for it, you didn't spend all this money on a car for someone else to tell you what to do with it (unless your seeking input), well that's my 2 cents anyway :)

 I have read the laws for vic they are legal in and outside but they must not be pulsating or facing foward and blue and yellow are not allowed and red is not allowed to face foward. Because they look like
emergency veichles. But if you have green, aqua and any of those they are legal. I have some in mine.
