My 308 and also the 253 had tapped noise even after rebuild both. Ok it wasn’t very loud tapping but was able to hear when starting the engine when cold but after the oil got circulating the tapping noise was just noticeable. I just went for thicker viscosity oil and also just filled the oil just over full mark that did the trick. If the noise is loud then most likely a lifter has collapsed. Are you running Gas and petrol?

Maybe you've caused one of the new ones to collapse by running it with water in the oil? If it disappeared when the new lifters went in, thats the problem. Are you sure its the same noise though?
