View Full Version : How many K's are to many?

Hi Guys I'm looking at a 06 manual GTS VE with 112,000 K's on the clock. I wasn't intrested in a car with that amount of K's however we dont often get GTS'S in the car yard here so I thought I would have a look anyway. I was very suprised at the condition the car was in inside and out.
I have looked at a number of vehicles with a lot less kilometers and all showed some signs of wear and tear, however this car seems immaculate. The only obivous thing I can find was a fair bit of wear on the disc's, probably about a one millimeter lip. Excellent service history, with one owner. I have paid a holding deposit and will book it in for a RACQ inspection early next week. Drive away price is $41,000. This car will be a Sunday drive for me, so I am not expecting to put a lot of K's on it over the next few years. What do you think? Can I expect any failures with a car with so many K's? Thanks

Honestly, 112000k's is barely run in. It was obviously some sort of daily - perhaps a lease car and as you say, it has been serviced correctly. Be sure the inspection goes over everything with a fine tooth comb, then negotiate any repairs / fixes with the yard, prior to taking the car.

If you drove it, how did it drive? Often, you are best placed to assess a car by looking in all the nooks and crannies - get it lifted on a hoist and check underneath, etc, etc. Make sure that everything works as it ought to, right down to stereo, steering wheel controls , power windows, boot release and all that. Also, be sure to get the brake discs checked properly, as they are an expensive replacement.

I think I found it on the carsales site and it looks okay. I also checked other cars available around that era and reckon you should be paying no more than $40k drive away, as it is 5 years old AND is the LS2 engine. Besides the dealer will have plenty of 'fat' in the deal for themselves.

Good luck with it.

Just to add to Macca's list, ensure that they check the MRC, if they go they are expensive.

is a MRC check somthing I could rely on with RACQ inspection?

The car did drive good, I have test drove couple and it seemed fine however there seemed to be a clunking noise in the front suspension. I noticed the MRC was off I turned it on and the noise seemed to go away. Does that sound right?

Whilst not trying to sway you in any way ... I noticed there are about 7 or 8 GTS's in QLD when searching on Carsales. Not sure of your price range but I searched $35k to $45k and the ones that came up had a fair bit less K's than the one you are interested in. These may prove a more viable option if you are concerned about the K's travelled on the Black one you are showing interest in. Obviously location is another factor.
You just have to be cautious ... not from it being thrashed, but by the mere fact that not only has the engine done the 112,000km but so has the rest of the car ...driveline, brakes, suspension, etc, etc.... so whilst the engine may be only run in, everything else may be running out.

Here is an example ... the car is at Wynnum (not sure where that is)

The owner is after a quick sale so my guess you could get this for $38k.

Anyway ... good luck which ever way you go.

112K on long runs will put far less strain on the car than 50K of stop start. The dealer has plenty to play with. get an extended warranty included - Km to at least 250k.

thanks fella's, any advice is good advice. is the "clucking" noise something to be concerned about or is that normal with the MRC turned off? that's what the dealer sad. I was thinking it might of been the suspension bushes?

Series 1 VE HSV GTS problems,

1} Thump noise front suspension = top bearings collapsed comon problem. They also place rubber between spring and strut bracket.

2} Front bumper sag = bumper supports need to be upgraded.

3} Harmonic balancer and aircon compressor bracket. The HB has a rubber coupling that can seperate, causing run out, HB needs replacing if over 3mm run out.
A/C comp bracket has an upgrade that has another idler wheel to stop the belt from deflecting and flipping off.

4} Rear Tail Lights melt in the sun, causing distortion of the circut board that the LED's are mounted too, some times stopping the LED from working, $1000 from Holden.

5} MRC Magnetic Ride Control, great if they don't spring a leak, seals leak, oil dropped = $$$$

6} Tyers, this is because of the different sizing and the directional treads, you can't rotate tyers around. Make sure there aligned and balanced well.

7} Radio Facia, both mine and my mates have dry solder joints, which cause colors to change, locking up.

8} Clutch, if upgrades are done to reach near 400kw, add clutch replacement in. The clutch gets grippy and wont return properly when driven hard.

This is most of the problems i can think of at the moment. Great car , love driving it BUT
My suggestion would be, buy a VZ series or spend a bit more on a VE series 2or3.

thanks Guns, I have booked the vehicle in with the local Walkinshaw dealer here, see what the inspection comes back with.

Typo right?

My e3 is a lease car, will be 3 years old and probably 120ks on it.

90% of the driving is on the freeway...

I'm sure it will be worth more than the pay out price on the lease..

G'day mate,
Im in the same boat looking for a new car after mine got written off. I have looked at every VE 06-09 clubbie and GTS on the net in the last 2 weeks and this one just didn't look right to me. It does have lots of good points ie. red leather, DVD , sun roof, but the high Ks and photo of missing wheel centre cap put me off. A dealer also said something to me about the indicator switch playing up in the series 1s. Like someone else said if your budget can do it look at a 08 upgrade with the LS3.

21-09-2011, 11:40 AM
Yeah I would like a LS3 however they're bit out of my price range.

22-09-2011, 08:24 AM
Im feeling your pain. I think i may down grade for a year or so then look at a 09 or series 2 down the track.

Yeah inspection didn't go so well. Got another in mind I'll see how this one goes.

Just got one!

Happy boy now. 2006 VE, nickel silver with the red leather and 41K on the clock. Got a big ass grin from ear to ear!

26-09-2011, 02:25 PM
Sun roof, DVD and after talking to the Walkinshaw fella here at the coast a three inch exhaust with the original tips and headers at either end?
