View Full Version : Middle-aged hoons need to 'grow up'

Article in yesterdays internet news - looks like us blokes have just been found out :!:

More than 100 hoons aged 45 or older had their vehicles seized for reckless driving last year, new police figures reveal.
The figures show that of the 2003 drivers whose vehicles were seized for hooning last year, 102 were aged 45 or older, with 13 of them 60 or older.
The worst age group for hoons was 18 to 24-year-olds. They accounted for 1050 of the seizures, followed by 25 to 34-year-olds (495 seizures) and 35 to 44-year-olds (173 seizures).
Under hoon laws, motorists caught driving recklessly can have their vehicles seized for 28 days.
Cdr Paul Zanetti, from the police traffic operations section, said the statistics were evidence that reckless driving was not limited to a particular age group.
"Obviously some people take longer to mature than others," he said.
"In fairness, even otherwise good drivers can be prone to moments of stupidity, but past good behaviour won't count for anything during a crash at 100km/h or more.
"The outcome will be the same and it won't be good."
Police Minister Rob Johnson said some drivers showed no maturity.
"Some people obviously never grow up and believe that driving like an idiot will somehow help them retain their youth," he said.
"Sadly, they are delusional. Regardless of age, anyone who repeatedly flouts the law and drives like a hoon will lose their car for good."
RAC spokesman Matt Brown said while most hoons were under 35, he was concerned by the number of older motorists being caught for reckless driving.
"We somehow need to get through the message to older male drivers that this behaviour is dangerous," he said.
"Whether it's that these drivers are going through a mid-life crisis and feel that they're invincible, they should be aware that speeding will catch up with them.
"The message to these people is that it' time to grow up.
"Surely by the time you hit your 40s you should be well aware of the potentially lethal consequences of doing something stupid in a car.
"These people have got no excuses for their behaviour."
The police figures showed the worst places for hoon seizures were Kalgoorlie (32), Baldivis (26) and Gosnells (25). Male motorists accounted for 1869 of the seizures, women accounted for 114 and 20 were classified as unknown.

Cdr Paul Zanetti, from the police traffic operations section,

Hey HRD you rekn he might be related to Bubba Zanetti?

Actually the story reminds me of one Larry Perkins being unsuccessfully pursued in one of the Brock Commodores by the local constabulary back in the 80's..boys will be boys as they say..

Why is it they don't mention other causes, such as the amount of traffic on our roads, the poor maintenance and retard structures of our roads, ridiculous tolls forcing more cars on roads, the list is endless.

"Whether it's that these drivers are going through a mid-life crisis and feel that they're invincible, they should be aware that speeding will catch up with them."

Blahblahblah? Does this even make any logical sense? If for example I overtook a camry driver cause he loved to slam his brakes instead of stopping smoothly, does that then mean I'm a hoon who's going through a mid life crises cause I think I'm invincible? O_o

I am a hoon, I drive slightly over the speed limit when I can which is not very often because there is some ****ing cockhead in the outside lane on the Motorway everyday. I have super soft conpound tyres and huge 6 piston brakes. I can stop 10 times quicker than a Jap shitbox. I am a fit bloke I jog 5km per day, my reflexes are dynamite, my registation plates are Reflective which will not show up on a speed camera. I can drive round Lakeside quicker than a 20 year old. I do burnous because I can afford it and love doing it.

My age over 60 years.
IF YOU ARE A HOON KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK DONT BE A PUSS.

Yes Yes Yes this does bring back the memories when I was on P Plates and used to take my Dads XD 351 Fairmont Ghia Auto out for a spin with my mates.

The first 1/2 Hour was just blowing all the red rust out of the exhaust system from lack of reving.

Dude....don't take offence, please....but aren't the hoon laws aimed at people that do sh!t like drive in such a way when getting chased (was is by the cops or someone else dude?) that they end up driving through 2 fences and a tree....2 weeks after getting off their Ps and .002 over the limit? Sure you had your reasons but dude...that aint even close to what I would consider to be how my driving is being judged as hooning.......it's about 5 light years beyond. I get criticised for getting up to 80 (in an 80 zone) in first gear as quick as the Whale will do it......without breaking traction. I think it's unfair that this is classed as hooning by some just because it's loud and quick. Once I hit 80....it stays there. I also object to be pigeon holed along with real hoons...albeit a one off if you really have learnt your lesson (and all credit to ya).
These laws are there to send a message that the off the wall sh!t that goes on out there and puts peoples lives at risk (and yes I do accept that what I do does risk lives even though technically not hooning by the letter of the law) is not tolerated anymore. I don't see any problem with the laws or the consequences...if I did what you did and they took what was left of my ride and crushed it I wouldn't be arguing. Even if they got me before I hit the first fence and took my ride and crushed it I wouldn't argue...I'd be p!ssed right off....but at my behaviour...not the law......coz I know the law and I know the consequences for breaching the law.

ahk that is fair enough, point is i wasnt hooning, i wasnt speeding, i didnt see the keep left sign because i was too busy watching the f stick behind me up my backside wh just told me he wants to take my wheels.. 2 week earlier same thing happend to my mate and the bloke ript out a masheti.. so try explaining that 1 to the cops.. and yes laws are in place, but when u live with ur misses for 6 months and decide to break it off coz shes a cheating hoa and she takes half ur stuff, would u say they hit the nail on the head with that 1 aswell??

I work with the legal side of things everyday and see pretty much every scenario possible, and from my point of view which will vary to others, i dont think that the law is the way it should be when it comes to these laws.. Mark skaife and germany have wanted to make the speed limit on freeway 140km/h, why? to reduce fatigue, isnt 40km/h over the speed limit hoonings? well why are they considering it then.. i know we have to follow rules and thats just life from when ur a little kid growing up with parents and schools ect.. If i do something wrong im the first to admit it and believe me ide be the 1st to crush my car (13months and not 1 burnout in the ute mind you)

I would beg to differ.
The Road Safety Amendment (Hoon Driving) Act 2010 (No. 76 of 2010) is merely an amendment to the existing Road Safety Act 1986. Both of these are Victorian Legislation. What the Hoon Driving amendments do is specify altered consequences for already existing legislation and it is specifically aimed at the powers relating to impoundment, immobilisation and forfeiture of a motor vehicle. An example is where they substitute wheel clamp for steering wheel lock.
All the offences that you get pinged for already exist, such as careless driving, dangerous driving, excessive speed, improper use of a motor vehicle, deliberately or recklessly entering a level crossing, loss of traction, drugs and alcohol offences etc, etc, etc.
All that has changed is that now, you can have your ride immobilised, impounded or crushed.
The offences haven't changed, just the consequences.
So no, they are not scape goat laws they ping you for when they don't know what you've done wrong....both you and the cops know you've farked up and now....time to hand over the keys and get labelled a hoon.
Pretty straight forward when you look into it.;)

Pretty straight forward when you look into it.;)

yes, but why did they need to alter the consequences.. just revenue making pigs and an excuse to take ur car to teach u a lesson.. fkn does my head in.. but i can sit here all day complaining and guess whats gonna happen?? nothing lol

peace

No....if it was a revenue making exercise they were embarking on they would simply have raised the amount of the penalty. What they are trying to do is modify behaviour by setting consequences that are more realistic to those whose behaviour they are trying to modify.
In other words, they reckon if they threaten (and follow through) to take a hoon's ride this will make the hoon think twice before driving like a total spanner on the public roads. It works for me.........

hoon laws are a joke,to say that its not revenue raising is to live in denial.doesnt it cost $900 to collect your car.gee that sounds like revenue to me,and seriously how much has the road toll been lowered since it came into effect?im middle aged and even i can see that the hoon laws have had no effect on the way people drive their vehicles.....including me hahahahahaha

Stewiecasserole

.....and that's why people keep loosing their cars. The revenue will always be generated whenever you have a penalty for a breach. You can jump up and down about it all you like but at the end of the day if you break one of the "joke" laws you'll just end up paying sh!tloads to get it back....keep doing it and kiss your ride goodbye. Not saying I agree or disagree with what they have done....just saying that it sure has modified my behaviour.

ok yes they loose their cars and their trying to modify behaviour..they should be taking a leaf out of how we modify behaviour in kids.... in order to modify their disruptive behaviour we remove the triggers, problem etc then REPLACE it with something else thats positive.

eg.

we have a kid who carrys straws or sticks, he knows hes not allowed to have them inside the house, if you ask him to leave them outide on the table and he is already wound up then he throws himself on the ground and bashes his head into the concrete, so we have a toy car we give him which he likes to play with if he comes inside without tantruming.

same should apply to this hoon crap.

if you dont want this behaviour on the streets build more places for people to do it in a safe place.

I have always said to my boy, I would rather see him smokin the hell out of a set of tyers below 40kph, not much damage can be done at 40.:D:D:D
But if i hear of him speeding more than 40 over, it's all over. I will be the one confiscating the car.
Speed does KILL and i think they should spend more time and effort stopping that, rather than ruining a bit of harmless fun.
When was the last time you heard of someone dying doin a burnout?
I to think there should be organized places and events, driver training and govt subsities for newer and better cars on the road.

Hear you sentiments completely....I'm even going to low jack the ride so I know how fast he's been doing and where the hell he is. Not that I don't trust my boys it's just that boys will be boys and peers group pressure is a very powerful force.
As to nobody getting killed by doing a burnout...well I'm a firm believer that stranger things happen and so here are two examples of what can go wrong. Admittedly one of them is a drag ute but still....he should not have lost it like that. Add all the people standing around in the other vid and you got more than one person getting killed.

This last vid is what I'd like to see more of....easy access...everyone back and some good run off. How cool would it be to have access to one on these close to home home....maybe not too close but you know what I mean. And try guessing where they
re from :lol::lol::lol::lol:
