View Full Version : JL Audio amps

Hi all,

Well I've bitten the bullet and ordered a new sound system to go into my beast this week and the order includes a JL Audio amp. The rest of the gear (spkrs, sub) is all going to be Pioneer.

My only query is with the amp. Pioneer I know. I also know its not the best or most expensive you can get in the way of car audio but I'm not an audiophile and I know Pioneer quality is pretty good and within the price range I'm prepared to pay. However JL Audio I've not heard much about? Does anyone have anything good/bad to say about this brand? The sales guy pretty much pushed this particular amp on me as Im intending to run the new rear spkrs thru the existing deck and this amp has some noise cancelling feature to deal with this issue?

I have a 4 channel one running 2 subs and the front splits. Never had an issue and it performs well. I say go for it.

Ah great..thanks for that. Thats exactly what Im doing too - using it to power my sub and front splits

What model is it?
JL make some very good gear, i'd choose them over the mainstream brands (Pioneer, Alpine etc) most times.

They did issue a recall recently on some of their amps in the states though, problem in the circuit board that allows the amp to cook itself. I'm not 100% if it includes the models we get here but this is the only big problem I have heard of about JL in all my years of car audio (around 10-12).

Hey WL,

the model is a XD-4004

From what I can see here (http://blazerforum.com/forum/showthread.php?p=313879) its supposed to be a very good powerful little amp?

Reviews on this amp seem a bit hard to find (apparently they were only released recently) but according to this (http://www.crutchfield.ca/JL_Audio_XD400_4_75W_x_4_Car_Amplifier_p/136XD4004.htm) they sound pretty good.

Looks like a good little amp. If they're replacing the Slash series amps with these then they must be a good thing. The Slash series amps were bulletproof!

Hi I had the 500/4 and the 1000/1 in my car for a while, great amps nice and clean and good power.
This is a cl*** D amp so is more efficient with less heat.
I personaly prefer a cl*** ab amp for high frequecies, but that is being fussy.
WL this is the XD model there is a slash v2.
One thing i noticed is the lack of speaker level input, have you replaced the head unit or using an level convertor.
Unsure what noise cancelling feature could be needed, apart from x-overs but nealy all amps have these.
Sorry I forgot to say JL Audio are a good brand and have been around for years!!!
I sold heaps of there amps and tonnes of there subs for the 18 odd years I've sold car audio.
I had 2 15 inch W7's in a VT sedan for a year and a half....... Sorry what did you say!!! Very Loud!!!!

hey gr,

yea the salesperson suggested this amp particularly as I want to keep the original look of the Blaupunkt head unit. Apparently this amp has some noise-cancelling feature a couple of other amps I looked at didnt. Thanks for the up on JL. Im quite confident I'm making a good purchase now.

Well after all is said and done I've decided to go with a complete Alpine system through another dealer.

thanks for all replies :)

Just kidding, I'm sure you'll be happy with it

Yea well last minute I decided to add an Alpine 2-din head unit to the package but the dealer I was going thru didnt supply Alpine. Made a call out to an Alpine dealer who obviously new his stuff and offered me a complete Alpine system for the same price as the jl audio/pioneer package I was going for, which was an offer just too good to p*** up.

I dont have all the specs on everything atm but the head unit is a CDE-W203E and I checked the power rating on the speakers and sub which are the same or higher than the package I originally intended to buy. Ive decided to omit the 6x9's in the rear parcel shelf (as he said, I dont need them with a 12" sub in the boot) and am going for co-ax Alpines in the rear doors instead. Still going for splits in the front and a 4-ch amp.

The guys giving me a 100% satisfaction guarantee with the job and being a car audio specialist I feel a bit more comfortable going with them than the original mob. I'll post some more specs here once shes all installed.

With a drive interstate planned within the next couple of days Im looking forward to cranking this system up on the open road :)

Glad you decided on the Alpine, normally you can't go wrong with it as a brand. Their Decks and Amps are great, speakers could be better but i think there better than pioneer, Type R subs take a lot of abuse.:D

If i had known you were planning 6x9's:eek: i would have said no way, you need a path for the b*** to travel into the cabin and the rear parcel ****s are perfect.

The CDE-W203e only has 1 pre-out, how are you going to fade the speakers or control the sub.
I thought you were getting a 4ch amp to run fronts and sub, if this is the case, you will be better getting a deck with 4ch pre-out and use them as front and sub. Then you can run rears off deck and have fading front to back and subwoofer volume control.

hey gr,

yea I didnt realise the head unit only had 1 pre-out so I wouldnt be able to fade the subwoofer BUT it just so happens I had the same discussion with the dealer today when I dropped the car off and we decided to go with the CDE-102E instead of the 2-din head unit. This gives me the pre-outs to fade the sub and front to back speakers. Turns out theres no speakers in the rear parcel shelf so the '****-cutouts' will be removed to allow the b*** from the sub into the cabin :)

Good stuff, and you get a pocket to put garage remote in!!:)
Did you get the CAT steering remote box.
Double dins are great but you pay a price premium and get less features!

23-12-2010, 01:53 PM
A shot of my head unit, to bad i own a VE and can't use it!!!

23-12-2010, 02:21 PM
Yea I like those head units. Im guessing its a bit pricier than the unit Im getting? But yea my unit comes with a facia plate to try keep the original look AND the face plate is detachable. Its not on the 2-din. When you refer to the CAT steering box are you referring to the audio control buttons on the steering wheel? He said he can supply and fit an Alpine unit for $300 but they dont give you any extra features aside from the factory controls.

He's thrown in a iPod cable(?) which I think he said are usually $80 and Ive decided to go for a proper Alpine grille for the subwoofer which I bought for $40 (he said thats cost price as they retail for $80). ive copied all my music to a USB stick for so all I gotta do now is pick me up an ipod :)

23-12-2010, 02:46 PM
Yes retailed for $1899, sorry didn't mean it like that, took me along time to build up to top gear.
Yep thats what i was on about, volume, track, mode.
I agree the alpine grills look much better than the cheapies and they are stronger, the prices quoted are good.
Enjoy it, when you get it and if i can help with any questions, just ask.

hey no prob gr, I didnt take it like that! :)

Well picked her up tonight and its very very nice. They said I need to bed the system in (takes approx 25 hrs) and advised me to bring it back when I return from interstate for another 'tune' (free of charge). They also threw in a remote control for the head unit. Big thanks to 'Automotiv Sound & Security' at Liverpool. All top guys down there :)
