Been a while sports fans. Been busy working, chilling, clowning around...oh yeah...and doing a couple of wee mods to the Whale. In a nut shell.....

2300 FDFI blower
The first ever Harrop OTR for the FDFI blowers
Howards 226/232 @ 115 cam
HM 1 7/8ths headers with a custom collector
Rollmaster single timing chain
APR head stud kit
Harrop 8 rib pulley kit
Milled heads
Some springy bits
1000cc injectors
Twin Walbro fuel pumps
Harrop Trurac diff centre
3.4 diff gears
Custom (and I mean custom) TCE 2700 stall
200 cell Outlaw cats mounted half length
3" stainless HM system
HM bimodals
Walky tips
ApexSpeed Motorsports catch can
Custom CDF coil pack brackets
Valve covers and throttle body HPC coated black
Hydraulic lifters
MSD programable fuel pump controller (system running at 99.74% at 5,500rpm - will be set to kick in and boost that fuel shit at 5,000rpm to squeeze that last gasp out of her)
New left rear hub and bearing (old one was rooted beyond belief - hangover from Shep me thinks - lol)
Replacing right rear wheel bearing on Thursday and maybe ( but hoping not) the hub as well as it has shit a brick.
Ecliptech Shift-i shift lights in blue to red (mad bit of gear this - so adjustable - look it up on You Tube).
Set of old school Boyd Coddington rims. 17"x10" and 17"x11". Only using the 10's wrapped in MT ET Streets 275/40R17's for the rears on the track (might go mini tubs/guard pulling to get the 11's on the rear and 10's on the front later).
Transmission - blew the old one up on the first day out of the shop but that's cool as it was fvcked anyway. Shop lent me a spare while the old one gets rebuilt tougher - should be back in a week or so - they had just finished milling the new shaft last week.
Swapping out the HSV rear callipers for a set of SSV's that I picked up for a song - straight off a new SSV that went straight to Walky's for a brake upgrade and some other sh1t.
Pulled the twin 12" sub box out of the boot the other day and am replacing it with an infinite baffle setup that can be pulled out in a minute or two to get the weight down for the track.
All work has been done by the boys at APS Service Centre in Frankston and tuned by Luis Sola.
Oh yeah....running e85 too.......smells like a fvcking distillery at the lights...love it.
Shut down APS's dyno on torque and Luis snuck her past to get a pull of 654rwhp - torque unknown.
Went to Harrop's with fullBOOST, shut their dyno down on the first pull.
Recalibrated and pulled 750rhhp and 1,260Nm

As soon as the trans is back in it's straight to Calder. Heathcote is on the cards to and definitely taking her to Temora and Cooma for the 1000m sprints if I get a spot.
Thats about it. Enjoy the vid.

Very nice Stew, been wondering what you've been up too. Bet that's a joy to drive!
What are your oil temps like Stew when you give it beans?

Yeah and when he says "go for a drive" he means he got to take it for a rip. Too modest bro. She's something else to drive Audi....joy don't do it justice. Thing just pulls so hard and so quick. It's sitting on 13psi but they put the small pulley on first up when we swapped to the 8 rib kit. Made 16psi but just light the rears up so quick.....good to know that there is that pulley sitting in the glove box.

Not sure on the oil temp Audi.....I run Dash Command through an iPad but to be honest I don't even know if it picks up oil temp....I've been keeping an eye on intake temps, boost (which is just a constant 13 lol - such a flat curve once it's on), coolant.....just more money if I need a cooler.....thanks for reminding me.

Ah cool, was just interested as there been a bit of debate lately about temps on the VF's when tracked.
Are you using it as your daily drive? Look forward to some track videos soon.

Yep....take her to work every day. Yet to track her but I know what your on about. It will be monitored one way or the other. I've got a better app that only works on the iPhone...gotta check that out for oil temp.

Vids will be posted as soon as I go to the track. HSV Owner's Club Dyno day this Sat at APS...will get some vids up of those pulls.

Do you know what's being done to the box to handle the power/torque?

Stewie what an upgrade, is their a better Grange in the country I doubt it hope you can get
some vid of the Whale in action I like your tyre size option sounds like your Grange has morphed into
a track car but still drivable as a daily, not sure about in the wet but.

Lol. Yeah. And the booster for the pumps is the least problematic solution. Way too many issues with adjusting the pressure and no fricken way I'm going bigger injectors. 8L a minute at WOT is enough.

Yeah, I certainly got to sink the slipper whilst driving it.... and it was awesome!!!!!
It was definitely an on/off switch instead of a progressive power delivery!!

I base my maths on 1,000cc/minute injector = 1 litre/minute. Multiply by 8 of the little wallet emptiers and that's 8 litres per minute. Correct me if I'm wrong but my fuel gauge seems to agree.....plus it behaves like a reverse tacho and moves nearly as quick.

Which makes me think....when does a car become to much for the street and more suited to the track ? Can this car be driven on the weekend cruise or is it beyond that ? Would it be better to have a street car and a car for the track ? I don't know, that's why I ask......

white_lie
13-04-2014, 08:25 AM
It would be perfectly drivable on the weekend IMO, just not economical. Plus E85 isn't available everywhere so you may have issues there... That's where multiple tunes for different fuels are gold.
I've seen 9 and 10 second drag cars cruising round with chutes on the back but I guess everyone's version of streetable is different. 1000rwhp is like the 300rwhp of years ago

Main reason I would have a dedicated track car is more for reliability. If something breaks, you don't need it fixed by the morning to get to work!

The drivability as a street car is not an issue. it's still got the A6 in it and is as smooth as anything. Flip the switch on the bimodals and she sounds like a V6 as long as the revs are below 3,500. She only gets angry, and extremely quickly at that too, when you stick the jandal in. I drive it to work, shops, everywhere. Fuel is an issue though as it just chews though it so quickly but the United Petroleum app lets me find the nearest e85 outlet quickly. I suppose a $500 shitter would be cheaper for work but for now she is a daily.

So, the trans is back in and has been road tuned. Frank sent the stall back to TCE to get split and fully cleaned out just incase there was anything nasty in there from the shop box he loaned me. Talk about looking out for you.
All that's needed now is a couple of thousand km of break-in then it's back to Luis Sola to get tuned on the dyno. After that....straight to Calder Park Drag Racing or Heathcote...which ever is open first. Feels so much better than the old box and I can't wait 'till it's run in and I can give it a good jandal full. Once again wrapped with the service from all the boys at APS SERVICE CENTRE FRANKSTON....great job.
Only issue now is the bloody front bar. Will be taking it to Advanced Plastic Repair. Dave has been doing these for over 15 years and is the only one capable of Urethane repairs. After seeing the pics he is confident the job will be bang up. Pricing is most reasonable too. Will keep you all posted as it develops.

Everything done is listed back in post #1. How long till she grenades? Fvcked if I know. Hopefully not for a while. I'll get some 1/4 mile times, do the 1,000m sprints, have the occasional play at an event and just drive it around normally, so I think it should hold together for a fair while.

Third run-on the clip and the 10.8 pass is near the end at 3.30. The first one is crap and you can see how bad the launch is and the shift are as heavy as all fvck. This was in sport mode first gear to well into fifth. We decided to go with a second gear launch and manual shift. That got the 10.8 time. You can see and hear it hit the limiter in 4th about 3-4 lengths from the trap...caught me out. Hopefully with a bt more care and attention from me and a couple of trackside tweaks we will see mid 10's at least. Weighed her on a quarry weigh bridge today...2140kg. Chubby bitch.

Unsure Sapper as it was only off to give it a freshen up respray...it's back on. I'm thinking your paint would suffer long term without it, especially if you work it hard.
There are self sticky alternatives out there. I was thinking of going down this path as I quite liked the texture of the naked hood but just got too lazy.

Not sure how much heat the blower puts off but I have never run the heat shield in any of my HSVs. Never had an issue with paint. Had my VZ for 7 years.

Hope you guys don't mind an old fart chiming in, but I just had to say how impressive your cars are.
I used to play with a couple of Corvettes before I retired and looking forward to getting my hands dirty again when I get delivery of my "new" toy soon.
It won't be a bruiser, just a cruiser, but there's always room for improvement no matter what you drive.
I can't wait to hear the sound of twin pipes again instead of my daily driver Pajero. Unfortunately gotta have a 4x4 where I live.
Thanks for allowing me to join your Forum too.
